(I don't intend to sponsor this package.)

That should have been s/Tags/Usertags/, I guess? It it's not for wheezy, then distribution in the changelog should be set to experimental rather than unstable.

   dget -x http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/o/ovito/ovito_1.1.0-1.dsc

Changes since the last upload:

 * Maintainer resurrected (Closes: #674283).

Hmm, I'm not sure "resurrect" is an appropriate verb here. (Unless you've been literally raised from the dead. :P)

 * New upstream release.

AFAICS upstream does not offer source tarball for downloads. (Ugh!) How was the .orig.tar.xz created then?

 * Touched debian/patches to reflect the changes in upstream.

Have you forwared the patches upstream?

 * ovito.lintian-overrides: override hardening warning;
   assumed to be a false-positive.

Yup, it looks like it's indeed false-positive.

The "This file was originally written by ..." comment in debian/rules, doesn't make sense to me. Please consider removing it.

The /usr/bin/ovitos script doesn't look good:
- it doesn't escape the arguments properly;
- it ignores the other exectuable exit code.
