Please check to make sure the automatic detection works ok for you but try to use it to not add too many dependencies that aren't actually required.What kind of automatic detection you are talking about?dh_python2?
Do you mean "dh_python2 tries to translate Python dependencies from requires.txt file to Debian dependencies" (from dh_python2(1) manpage)? retext doesn't even use setuptools, so that couldn't possibly work.
