Like so:

  bzcat libnonsense-0.1.0.tar.bz2 | gzip -9 - > libnonsense_0.1.0.orig.tar.gz

By doing that, the md5 checksums of

  bzcat libnonsense-0.1.0.tar.bz2 | md5sum

  zcat libnonsense_0.1.0.orig.tar.gz | md5sum

will match (no need to run tar, which is very useful when your sponsor
review your package).
