G77 compiler install issue

I just tried to install the G77 compiler, and the
install script decided to remove the modutils package.
I got a very draconian warning message telling me that
I could lose the use of the machine if I allowed this
to happen. When I told it to leave the modutils in
place, the install aborted. 

Why did it do this, and how do I work around it?
