Hi Anibal and debian-mentors,

Upstream has been promising to re-license Root for years. See, for
instance,
* http://root.cern.ch/root/roottalk/roottalk98/1521.html
* http://root.cern.ch/root/r2002_final_discussion.html (search for
  "license" in that page)
* http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01166.html

I'm optimistic that it will happen eventually. I do wish they would
describe the biggest obstacles to re-licensing -- clearly there must be
some. But I don't know if continued pestering will help :-)

In the meantime, I believe that Ricardo's intent (please correct me if
I'm wrong) is to request that people look over the Debianized Root
source package to make sure it is done well. So at least people will
have a good unofficial source of Root .debs before the license is
changed, and when it is, they can immediately be uploaded to Debian.

Finally, I want to note that Ricardo has been very kind in naming me as
a co-packager -- he has done by far most of the work; I've just been
offering advice and suggestions.

regards,
