Where to use dpkg-divert ?

Hello there.

I'm working on a side package that need to replace one file provided by
an official one.

I've been told to use dpkg-divert to do the job and, reading to the
manpage, it seems to be the right tool.

Even though I've read the docs, googled and experimented it, I cannot
find the right way to use it :

It seems that I need to do

    dpkg-divert --remove /path/to/official/file

some where in the installation process of my package.

Strangely, doing it in the preinst file does not do the trick, dpkg
still complains about overwriting a file.

Can someone tell me the correct way to use dpkg-divert ?
Which mainainer script should use it ?

Thanks a lot.
