Ahem, please don't label the entire Debian project on the basis of the
actions of one person who (AFAICT) isn't even a Debian Developer (ie someone
who is actually capable of uploading packages into the Debian distribution).
Debian's manuals on the subject do talk about contacting upstream, and
working closely with upstream authors is highly emphasised. I see no reason
to go spare at the entire project because someone didn't listen.
I also note that you said you "have no interest in Debian", but you're
willing to make the presumption that "Debian looks like the most
irresponsible distro". Wild jump, that one.
I will agree with you, though, that it would have been nice for the person
involved to make great pains to contact you before hijacking - which they
did (although perhaps not in the order I would have done it).
I have a question for you, though: why is it, do you think, that someone
would have thought that playmidi was "quite dead" upstream? I have no idea
what the answer is, it's really between you and the person who made the
claim, but are there e-mail addresses associated with playmidi which are no
longer read? Is the current location of development information clearly
available on search engines and in package source? Are there old locations
referenced in source tarballs which are dead? This presumption of death
must have come from somewhere...
