It should of been an option.  Just because Solaris sucks when it comes 
to shared libraries (#4 on my why-I-hate-Solaris list) doesn't mean 
everything should kludge on Linux. I think 1.4b or something should
be ok.

There is a very long and very sad thread on BTS and another list
debian-devel? about this thing.
