The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th ed. lists "spell checker" (noun) and "spell check" (verb). The idiom "spelling checker" is not in there, nor is it in common use, I guess. FWIW, "Zork: Grand Inquisitor" contains a spell checker of the other variety. -- Robbe
