It seems to work fine for me, at least starting from a clean source
directory:

mizar:[~/src/deb/notmine/teapop-0.3.3] dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc
-S
dpkg-buildpackage: source package is teapop
dpkg-buildpackage: source version is 0.3.3-1
dpkg-buildpackage: source maintainer is Nick Phillips
<nwp@lemon-computing.com>
 fakeroot debian/rules clean
dh_testdir
dh_testroot
rm -f build-stamp
rm -f config-*-stamp
rm -f install-*-stamp
# Add here commands to clean up after the build process.
/usr/bin/make distclean
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/mdz/data/src/deb/notmine/teapop-0.3.3'

make: [clean] Error 2 (ignored)
dh_clean
 dpkg-source -b teapop-0.3.3
dpkg-source: building teapop using existing teapop_0.3.3.orig.tar.gz
dpkg-source: building teapop in teapop_0.3.3-1.diff.gz
dpkg-source: building teapop in teapop_0.3.3-1.dsc
 dpkg-genchanges -S
dpkg-genchanges: including full source code in upload
dpkg-buildpackage: source only upload (original source is included)
mizar:[~/src/deb/notmine/teapop-0.3.3]
