I only have /usr/share/mime-info on my machine, do you mean that?

Good question. From what I see Gnome's non-std database does not add
functionality over mailcap/mime.types. I don't care much whether they
use this in addition, but the standard way of doing things should be
supported as well.

You may want to file a bug report on the apporpriate package.
