Branden has some comments about XF4 phase 2, but does
not mention anything about xlib incompatiblities.

However, "Also note that any packages compiled against an old version of the XPM library will be removed by this upgrade.",

indicates that there might be some issues with xpm.

Anyway, as long as you have the 3.3.6 libs installed
(binary cannot execute if shared libs are missing, using only 401 libs
 will get the wrong version)
I think it should work ok (the xlib protocol hasn't changed, just the
wrapper around it).
