One of the fastest ways there is of getting most of the work done for you in the case of MOST packages) is something like: $ cd package-1.1 $ zcat ../package_1.0-1.diff.gz | patch -p1 $ chmod +x debian/rules From here, if the patch was 100% successful, just edit the changelog and build a new package.
