While this is perfectly possible I'd rather recommend to use

   dbconfig-common

An example how to use this is in the packaging stuff for mlstdbnet at

   svn://svn.debian.org/svn/debian-med/trunk/packages/mlstdbnet/trunk/

Remark:
For those who wonder why mlstdbnet is not continued:  I'd regard this
package in a quite reasonable state.  However, my colleagues who
intended to use it stalled this effort and I do not really want to
upload a basically untested package.  So if there is any interest and
the chance to test - just tell me.

I really good idea to find out what code exactly is connected to
dbconfig-common in all the packaging files is to do a simple

   grep dbc debian/*
