I have contacted upstream to get more information on which patches are needed,
what those do and if upstream for the patches has been contacted.

For wxwidgets I have learned on their IRC channel that only minor bugfixes get
applied. I guess the same goes for other upstream projects which *could* mean
those patches will not make it (for coding guidelines etc) or not in a
reasonable timeframe.

What could be a solution in that case. Before patching Debian packages (if at
all possible those patches would have to go through some review process. Is it
reasonable to assume that the maintainers of the Debian packages can be
bothered to do this ?

If this is not possible would it be possible to install patched versions
locally (non-conflicting, not system-wide) just as they do in their self
contained binaries ?
