Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I wished to see how much of a page an image would occupy, and clicked "Preview"
from the Print dialog.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
Nothing happened.
When I invoked eom from the terminal, along with a number of warnings, the
above text was printed.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected the preview to be displayed.

MATE/eom pull request from 2015:
https://github.com/mate-desktop/eom/pull/107 : "refactor draw/expose code a bit
#107"
contains the following text:
"As for preview via pdf, it happens even w/o my work. It first tries evince,
then gives a Gtk-WARNING when it can't find it on my system, then tries atril
and opens the generated pdf in it. It's the same in both GTK+ builds."

I do not have evince. I DO have atril.
atril:
  Installed: 1.24.0-1
  Candidate: 1.24.0-1
  Version table:
 *** 1.24.0-1 500
        500 https://deb.debian.org/debian testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I can get around the problem by making a symlink to atril, and renaming it as
'evince'.

Something must have happened between 2015 and now, as the commenter had success
with eom trying evince and then trying atril.
Now, it apparently does not try atril, as if it did, it would have succeeded.

[Note: both eom and atril-previewer (once I make the symlink) are displayed natively under Wayland,
not XWayland]
