The assertions I wanted to bring to light actually were -
** (subtitleeditor:2629): CRITICAL **: 07:13:28.572: int
Config::get_value_int(const Glib::ustring&, const Glib::ustring&):
assertion 'state' failed

apparently these two GLIB errors are something to do with
mate-desktop while the one
shared before has to do with subtitleeditor itself.
Could you please look into the matter ?
To make sure there are no old configuration files, I had purged
subtitleeditor, removed the configuration file from
~/.config/subtitleeditor (although aptitude should have taken care of
that) , installed it afresh and then while fiddling with an .srt file
got the assertions above.
