I have provided a fix for the above issue at
https://salsa.debian.org/debian-mate-team/mate-desktop/commit/0578b7d7a99369a2a2520d174002b1dfdd6a8434

Could you rebuild the mate-desktop source package from source with the  
above change applied and report back if that works for you?
