Indeed I was mistaken about the nature of the package. On the other hand, maybe the package name is unclear. I thought it were a metapackage like kde-full (full desktop, but not the distribution's environment for the desktop).
I'm completely agree with you but it's the upstream name, see https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-desktop : you could imagine to contact them to rename it.
