Getting involved with LTS indeed requires a bit of reading and quite a portion of knowledge of the Debian security and LTS workflow.

In case you this or that computer language, there is a crucial point where you can help without reading all the Debian docs that much: One big effort in LTS maintenance is backporting patches (which mostly are taken from fresh upstream Vcs commits) to the old upstream code versions as found in LTS (squeeze-lts, soon wheezy-lts, etc.).

Those patches can be provided via the Debian bug tracker. Once a patch is available (and works) all LTS formalisms (that requires reading the Debian specific manuals) can be handled by the LTS team just fine. If you want to get deeper involved in Debian packaging, I'd suggest starting to work with other DDs or DMs on packages in Debian testing/unstable first (which is my personal opinion of a good entry point).

[And: I also have family and kids and all that, but it did not prevent me from reading all those manuals (I became a DD in 2012, current age is 41). Actually, I am quite thankful that the Debian project is so well documented, because asking all the relevant questions would be more time consuming than reading good documentation.]

Greets,
Mike
