Thanks, that looks like a very viable option for building official
debian-live images. The grub parts themselves aren't very difficult
(we'd like to ideally replace isolinux with grub anyway) and the d-i
bits aren't that tough because currently we just download pre-built d-i
builds anyway.

Haven't looked at your code yet, but if no one beats me to it I'll add
this high on my list shortly after DebConf.

(that said, I also have a similar system but due to my commitments it's
moving really slowly and we want *something* that's sustainable by bookwork)
