I've finished it. I needed some more time to confirm that the amd64 live
images for Buster did not need lilo (otherwise it would have needed a
backwards compatibility mode).

The merge request is at:

The merge request adds Bullseye and removes the need for lilo.
Using upstream/master with the MR applied, will result in images of
Buster that will allow the installer to run. If you want to use
Bullseye, you'll need the daily installer
(--parent-debian-installer-distribution daily), otherwise you'll get a
warning that no kernel modules are found (because the installer is based
on the current Debian Stable).
