I suspect we need to include the amdgpu module in the initramfs;
at Tails we do it with:

  https://salsa.debian.org/tails-team/tails/blob/master/config/chroot_local-includes/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/kms

Seeing the kernel log would help debug this: most modern X.Org drivers
rely on the kernel to do modesetting nowadays.

Also, reading the logs, I wonder if xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu is
installed. Can you please check, or point us to the exact
image you've tested?
