No persistence in Debian live 9.4.0 xfce ?

Hi team,

I am unable to setup persistence with Debian live 9.4.0 xfce

I am using
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-9.4.0-amd64-xfce.iso

So far, I have been able to boot this image from a USB stick. The idea
is to setup a partition on the same USB stick to be used for persistence.

I follow the instructions under:
https://live-team.pages.debian.net/live-manual/html/live-manual/customizing-run-time-behaviours.en.html#558,
including section 10.3.1 The persistence.conf file

When the boot menu comes, I press "Tab" and I am able to add
"persistence" option after live=boot.

The problem is that no files are added to the persistence partition and
consequently no changes are saved.

As a comparison, I tried the equivalent instructions available for Kali
Linux under
https://docs.kali.org/downloading/kali-linux-live-usb-persistence

And when using a Kali live OS, persistence works perfectly.

I tried to apply the same instructions with Debian, including several
variations but no luck so far.

I believe that something is not working properly and my limited
knowledge does not allow me to investigate further. I am happy to
provide more debug info if you let me know how to obtain it. Maybe
someone can try to get it working following the instructions and report
on the result.

Thanks for your patience,

Miguel
