Hmm. It was left over from my original project which was a Raspbian live build, which suddenly started failing in the same way. I tried to reduce it to a shorter example, not realising that 'firmware' was a valid area for Raspbian but not Debian. So that explains my example.

Unfortunately I do need the 'firmware' area for the Raspbian project, and while using it used to work (with the Raspbian repositories) under 1:20151215, it seems to produce this error under 1:20161216. I can't expect you to help with Raspbian issues, but if you have any ideas I'd welcome them. Otherwise I guess this is invalid.
