So additionally, a blend would add the value of an expertly
chosen set of rescue packages, representing the best of what Debian has
to offer in helping a user deal with a wide variety of rescue scenarios.

This is the number one reason why I started building my own live images based on jessie xfce-desktop. With the addition of a few critical diagnostic and rescue tools, Debian Live is upgraded from a handy desktop and Debian installer to an all-purpose emergency survival kit. The footprint of these tools is modest and in my view there is no reason why Debian Live should not become the rescue image of choice. I keep one in my pocket wherever I go. One image to rule them all.

This is an excerpt from my config/package-lists/custom.list.chroot:

# diagnostics
memtest86+
hdparm
smartmontools
mesa-utils
pciutils
usbutils
lshw

# luks rescue
cryptsetup-bin
lvm2

# miscellaneous
ntp
less
nmap
traceroute

Kind regards,
