Have you had time to look into this again?

Note that support for multiple read-only layers was added in Linux
4.0-rc1, so we can now add support for it in live-boot (look for
"Multiple lower filesystems" in components/9990-misc-helpers.sh).

Do you want to give it a try? If so, please base your work on my
branch, and then I'm happy to test your changes and report back :)
