Is it possible to boot the chroot without creating an ISO et al?

Hi guys!

Is it possible to boot the chroot without creating an ISO et al? Would
like to boot linux (setting up a /proc/cmdline), run initrd, & init
ideally.

Only got as far as http://webconverger.org/chroot/

Maybe there is a straightforward way of setting it up with Virtualbox?
Without squashfs blah

I used to be able to iterate really quickly with a netboot setup, but
I don't want to go back there again!

Many thanks,
