not a debian project, but a project, yes.

if you create a new distribution, then your distribution has a codename.
that codename, e.g. mydistro in your case, is the one you would pass to -d.
assuming your distribution is debian based, and, since live-build
doesn't know about your distribution, it will not make much sense, since
debian distribution specific hacks are not applied then and other
defaults which are good for debian will not work for your distribution.
therefore, depending on what the default assumptions are, will have a
failed, non working, or otherwise broken or suboptimal build.
which is why you shouldn't do your own distribution in the first place
unless you a) know what you're doing and b) you're adding support for
your project in functions/defaults.sh.
Why is ubuntu a mode not a codename (distribution) ?
because ubuntu is a project, not a distribution release.
If I need other mode (mydistromode), what I have to do?
why do you want to do a new distribution in the first place? depending
on what you want to achieve, there's a less intrusive way.
