Just loop-mounted the squashfs from both amd64 and i386 Gnome live ISOs
dated 2011-11-05 02:15am and chrooted into them:

root@sb74:/# dpkg -l|grep httpfs
(shows nothing)

root@sb74:/# httpfs2
bash: httpfs2: command not found
(httpfs2 is the actual binary filename from the httpfs2 package)

root@sb74:/# httpfs
bash: httpfs: command not found
(httpfs is the binary filename /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live
copies the httpfs2 binary as into the initrd.)

Neither is it contained as /bin/httpfs in the initrd from the mentioned
ISO...
