Please, keep the list cross-posted. Firstly, there are way more
knowledgeable people than me here, thus maximizing the chances of
finding a solution to your problems and secondly, others migt have
similar problems a d could learn by following our conversations.

I don't know here how live sets up the tmpfs mounts (and don't have
access to one at the moment). But the first step is to find out if you
are being limited by this at all. You could try to start up your system
(without the unpacking step) and look at how it is set up. If you think
it's not enough, you might try to change it. An example, to change my
tmpfs /tmp mount I do:

  sudo mount tmp /tmp -t tmpfs -oremount,size=96M

Then unpack your data mannually. Does it work then?

No idea. At some point you'll of course run out of RAM. But it's just
worth trying.

Right -- may be you are better off keeping things uncompressed and
letting the union file system do its magic. That's what live is good at,
anyway -- right?

Is space tight on your live medium?
