Passing argument to apt-get

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to build a gnome-less Lenny image (xfce), however some gnome stuff has crept in (gksu, gnome-mime-data, gnome-mount, etc). From what I can tell, (since none of packages require gnome) is that apt is installing the "recommended" packages as if they were dependencies, i.e. synaptic only recommends gksu but somehow it gets installed in my live image. I did a little reading and found the option for apt '--no-install-recommends' but I am not sure how I could pass this to live helper. Does anyone know how this could be done, or any other way to remove the gnome stuff? Thanks in advance.
