i'm feeling bad about having internal variables made usable to the
outside, and then e.g. you depending on it as it's likely that they
could be broken by accident sometimes. i'll think about something, maybe
i'll have a better idea.
The way its named (LH_ prefix) indicates to me its not an 'internal' variable; maybe at one point it was meant to be exposed as an option?
However, I agree that we should probably give more thought as to how we want to handle more advanced and esoteric options that we don't want to confuse/bother regular users with.
