buildind an iso do not seem to eat up the / volume anymore

hi

a while ago .. when i was building an iso the size which resulted into
about 400MB
it looked like the process was also consuming the same amount of / volume
even though the iso was being built on an another one
so am now giving sid a whole ssd of dell's mini9 just for doing lh things

but recently i experienced a clean build without consuming any amount
of / volume
and got the binary.iso on the other volume

the latter case is how lh is designed to behave?
am not sure if my system had swap last times
but this time it does have 1.5GB for swap
maybe that why?
