Upon further googling on the xorg lists, I found a refernce to problems
with KVM's and resolution.
I'm pleased and sorry at the same time to say that is indeed my
problem.
Swopped out the KVM switch box and now get 1280x1024 !!!
There are a few points of interest:
I had already started work on Diederik de Haas suggestion to borrow
from knoppix and there are a good couple of "How-to"'s on this around.
I had installed hwdata-knoppix_xxx.tar.gz & ddcxinfo-knoppix_xxx.tar.gz
and then running the resulting:
#hwsetup
#mkxf86config
after this, xrandr would return the higher resolutions (with-in debian-
live of course and on the original KVM).
I had not got as far as learning how to reload the KDE desktop with
the new settings...no need now.
Secondly, we have a number of these HP/Compaq switches around and only
mine had this "fault".
They are HP/Compaq EO1004B 8 port Server Console switch. Flashed it as
well, no change.
All I can do is say thank you, for everyones help in this matter and
hoping this reply may be of help to others.
