This does appear to be the case. After several iterations of 'sh -x
`which lh_foo`' and repeating with the last thing that failed,
debootstrap does appear to be the problem. Should I submit a bug
report with that project?

Does that suggest anything? I have a complete build log that I can post as well
NB: I just updated to live-helper 1.0.0-2 and the same problem is
present. This is probably a debootstrap bug.
