Update: gij installs cleanly on build host (for whatever value of
"cleanly": it took me a while to evict all the Java cruft which followed
in :-/

So the above problem might just be a follow-up of the "real" problem.

Sigh. With the "old" (etch-backport) version it was coming along so
nicely :-(
