custom kernel

I actually did several tests and noticed that if the host system has
the same 'flavor' as the custom kernel being installed in the live
system, lh_chroot fails to install the custom kernel arguing that the
modules already exist! (which is true but I don't see the problem!) Is
this a desirable behavior? I just recompiled the same kernel with a
different --append-to-version than the host kernel and everything
worked again.
