can't make usb img

I think this is the "variant" passed to [c]debootstrap.

There is a relevant changelog entry:
live-helper (1.0~a34-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Setting LH_BOOTSTRAP_FLAVOUR only when using cdebootstrap.

I don't immediately see any bugs, can you make sure your config
settings aren't specifying something they shouldn't?  Also if you have
[c]debootstrap set, make sure [c]debootstrap is really installed.
