I think this is a missunderstanding: by default, the distribution is set
to lenny. then, the default value for the union filesystem is aufs.

if you set the distribution to etch, where aufs is not available, it
defaults to unionfs.

i corrected the respective sentence in the manpage to be more clear
about that.
