Here is a possible solution...

(i am not sure what you mean by persistent home dir.. so if i am repeating
something just ignore me)

When you boot from usb, why not use another partition in place of the
ramdisk?

So when the rootfs is mounted... make it so changes are written to another
partition (or filesystem in the form as a file) on the usb device.. not to
ram.

Because of the limited number of writes on flash devices, /proc and so on
should be on ramdisk...

I am not 100% sure if the current casper could handle this... but perhaps a
small/simple patch would make it possible.
