I am working on a patch for casper that will set the password to blank..

It allows "debian" to log into gnome w/o a password.. the user has to set
the password before the screensaver turns on though... for some reason the
screen saver wont accept a blank password.

the patch removes the password from /etc/shadow and adds a line to pam
configuration that allows users w/ a blank password to login.

I didn't check the new casper to see if they fixed this..
it will prob deal with the file /etc/pam.d/common-auth or something like
that.
