Failure to load squashfs module

I put together an ISO today, burnt it and tested it. The system was
unable to mount the rootfs because apparently it can't load the
squashfs and unionfs modules, even though they are there.

After this error it drops me to busybox, where I can see that the
modules do indeed exist, but I still cannot mount the rootfs because
it complains that the loop device is in use, or permission denied or
filesystem type not recognised.

Any ideas?
