Since you are the maintainer…, let me suggest you next time try to test
src:lintian and src:diffoscope against any new upstream version of file.
Those two package rely heavely on `file` output (or, well, on libmagic),
and they have a scary tendency on breaking at each new src:file update.

As a diffoscope developer I'd appreaciate a heads-up *before* getting
hit by a RC bug (#897099) and I'm sure it's the same for Chris (whom is
involved in both lintian and diffoscope).

I don't know whether any of the other rdepds rely on its output so much,
if there are the same treatment would apply for them as well.
