Yes, unfortunately, we do not really maintain a stable API at this time,
though I am hoping we will some day.  If it is any help, the following
may be useful:

The source package also have doc/README.developers and in 2.5.11 (or
later) it also have the "api-doc" target in debian/rules to generate
HTML docs of the some of the modules.
  If you have any suggestions or questions to/about the API or the
documentation, do not hestitate to file a bug or contact me.
