That's fine with me, I usually run lintian on the .changes file indeed.
If the ones in the .dsc files weren't checked at all before I don't see
much of a regression with not adding a check for it, that would indeed
be a feature request then (which wasn't my intention) and not a (minor)
bug fix. :)

Hopefully it does not only check the md5sum, yes.
