Lintian still reports the same error...

Bad news, I'm afraid ;)

Actually, «/usr/share/doc/autotools-dev/README.Debian.gz» recommends
build-depending on a versioned automake, and I think this is what most
people do.

I understand that you aren't too fond of the automake exception, specially
if it involves checking all the versions, but I don't see another way
to fix this.
