The patch looks good. It makes the lintian output depend on the version
of dpkg you have installed, though. Not sure if that is desirable. On
the other hand we would have to depend on a sid dpkg anyway because
the sarge one doesn't have the necessary files yet.
Could you perhaps modify your patch so that it works both with sarge's
and with sid's dpkg?
