Lintian needs some temporary space for checking, and that is defined by
POSIX to go looking for $TMPDIR of /tmp if that one isn't set.

Using current dir is not always an option, and should not be the
default: you don't want to clutter that location you happen to be in
unasked. Think running lintian on some r/o (for you) filesystem, like a
local mirror.

If your $TMPDIR isn't large enough (and who has such a very small /tmp
nowadays... My /tmp is a 1G tmpfs for example), set it so some other
value.

Closing,
--Jeroen
