In that case, I personally think the safest strategy is including such
notice, even though it was not present in the first place.

Of course, in order to do that, one has to *know* which copyright and
permission notice applies to the original code...
But one *also* has to know that, in order to engage in any
redistribution of the original work or of any modified version!
